Beginner's Greek

Beginner's Greek (2008) by James Collins. Peter and Holly meet on a flight from New York to L.A. It's love at first sight -- but when Holly gives Peter her phone number, he inexplicably loses it. Are they fated to be together? This book would have us believe it, and it's not hard to accept, as the tale is charmingly, humorously told. Should make a good movie. Grade: A-

The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness

The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness (2007) by Elyn R. Saks. This extraordinary memoir tells the story of Saks' struggle with schizophrenia and psychosis throughout her adult life, and of her ultimate victory -- that of finding a respected profession, making many valued friends and colleagues, and finding love. It's a scary ride, to be sure, but will prove rewarding to the thoughtful reader. Grade: A
