My Lobotomy

My Lobotomy (2007) by Howard Dully and Charles Fleming. In 1960, when he was twelve years old, Dully was subjected to a transorbital lobotomy. What that means is that the "doctor" stuck two long, sharp tools through the edges of his eye sockets and used them to scramble his brain. (Technically, a lobotomy involves cutting the connection between the right and left half of the cerebral cortex.) For the next 40 years, Dully struggled with life after lobotomy. He was not turned into a zombie, but spent his time in and out of institutions and jail. This book recounts his life and how, at last, he has found peace. Grade: B+
